The Coast by Joseph J. Thorndike Jr.5/10/2023 (Line drawings-not seen.)įrom the national correspondent for PBS's MacNeil-Lehrer Newshour: a moving memoir of her youth in the Deep South and her role in desegregating the Univ. An effective combination of eyeball observation, rich history, and sad acknowledgement of how poorly we have used still another national resource. And he's eloquent in his plea that the coastline be kept open to all instead of being fenced off and guarded, as over 90 percent of it already is. Thorndike applauds the work of conservationists and shows what nature can do to an overbuilt shore-front, whether by the slow death of erosion or by the hammer blow of a Hurricane Hugo. Flagler, who built the railroad to the Florida Keys. The early explorers are all mentioned here- Champlain, Hudson, Verrazano, and many less famous-as are the planners and developers, from Robert Moses of New York to Henry M. Along the way, he visits the top of Manhattan's Twin Towers and Virginia's Chincoteague Island Maine lobstermen tell of mysterious winter fires in the houses of summer people and Coast Guard officers tell of rescuing boaters in the waters off the Virginia Capes. Thorndike's record of the journey-actually, several trips over a period of years-takes him down the coast from Maine to Key West. A well-written travelogue from a founding editor of American Heritage who drove the length of the East Coast with frequent stops to walk the beaches and talk with natives.

The kreutzer sonata tolstoy5/10/2023 Kreutzer Sonata: Expressions of Human Anguish in Music, Literature and Beyond (Marja Karelia, Simon Fraser University) Nobody, it is true, directly disputes the proposition that debauchery should not be practiced, either before or after marriage, that it is wrong artificially to destroy childbirth, that children are not to be made playthings, and that amatory union ought not to be placed higher than anything else, - in short, nobody denies that chastity is better than looseness of morals. Never a great fan of Beethoven’s music, Kreutzer found the Sonata “outrageously unintelligible” and said, that “one would have to be in the grip of a kind of aesthetic and artistic terrorism, not to find in this work clear renewed proof of the fact that for some time now this composer has been indulging in whims, above all striving to be absolutely different from other people.” The Sonata was dedicated to the French violin virtuoso Rodolfe Kreutzer, who refused to play it. Laughing Giraffe by Mwenye Hadithi5/10/2023 This all changes when the Littlest Egret challenges Giraffe to see who is the loudest. It shouted and laughed all the time and frequently scared some of the other creatures out of their wits. The story is about a giraffe who was, once upon a time, one of the noisiest animals on the great plains of Africa. The familiarity of the story’s setting and the wild animals are probably some of the reasons the publisher chose it for translation. Without knowing that the author grew up in Nairobi, Kenya, and that he grew up in a wild garden full of gazelles, porcupines and warthogs, one could have assumed it was a locally crafted tale. Laughing Giraffe, originally published in English, has recently been translated into Afrikaans (Kameelperd wat so Lag), isiZulu (Undlulamithi oHlekayo) and isi-Xhosa (Undlulamthi Ohlekayo). Kameel-Perd Wat So Lag (Laughing Giraffe) by Mwenye Hadithi and Adrienne Kennaway Laughing Giraffe, originally published in English, has recently been translated into Afrikaans (Kameelperd wat so Lag). Mere christianity5/9/2023 But you must regard it as waiting, not as camping. When you do get into your room you will find that the long wait has done you some kind of good which you would not have had otherwise. I do not know why there is this difference, but I am sure God keeps no one waiting unless He sees that it is good for him to wait. It is true that some people may find they have to wait in the hall for a considerable time, while others feel certain almost at once which door they must knock at. For that purpose the worst of the rooms (whichever that may be) is, I think, preferable. The hall is a place to wait in, a place from which to try the various doors, not a place to live in. But it is in the rooms, not in the hall, that there are fires and chairs and meals. If I can bring anyone into that hall I shall have done what I attempted. Prefaceįor Lewis, Mere Christianity “is more like a hall out of which doors open into several rooms. As a Christian apologetic, Lewis defends the basic Christian faith from its critics and also presents the basics of the Christian life. Based on a series of radio broadcasts during the Second World War between 19, Mere Christianity is Lewis’ explanation for the logical validity of Christianity. Stillhouse lake book5/9/2023 But I always knew there was way more to her than we were getting. She is a detective in the town where Gwen and her family settled in the first book, and for most of the series she was always in the background, providing support when needed and police protection too. Kezia’s voice was such a nice addition to the narration. Plus she knows that if something should happen to her that Sam will be there for them. In this one she is just starting to trust that her kids will be okay without her as well. I loved that she has shown so much growth through out the books too. It always seems to be that just when things start to settle down, some one is out to get her and her family once again. Gwen has gone through so much in her life. Quite the page turner and really left me breathless at times! Plus this story was so intriguing, and the killer wasn’t like anything I had come across before. I always liked her and missed her when she wasn’t involved in some of the other books. I loved that Kezia got a starring role in this one. I think this one ended up being my favorite of the series. ARC provided by Thomas and Mercer via NetGalley for an honest review. And in the future things are poised to get much worse, thanks to the forthcoming Netflix series starring Neil Patrick Harris. Despite their wretched contents, A Series of Unfortunate Events has sold 60 million copies worldwide and been made into a Hollywood film starring Jim Carrey. In the tradition of great storytellers, from Dickens to Dahl, comes an exquisitely dark comedy that is both literary and irreverent, hilarious and deftly crafted. In The Reptile Room the siblings endure a car accident, a terrible smell, a deadly serpent, a long knife, a brass reading lamp, and the re-appearance of a person they'd hoped never to see again. Unfortunately, they are exceptionally unlucky. They are charming, and resourceful, and have pleasant facial features. Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire are intelligent children. But if you insist on discovering the unpleasant adventures of the Baudelaire orphans, then proceed with caution. You still have time to choose another international best-selling series to read.
